As the whole world knows by now, we had a massive earthquake today, at approximately 3pm local time. The epicenter was north of Tokyo, but my office building shook really violently. As we scrambled down the stairwell during the evacuation, we could hear the building groan. These nice, modern earthquake-proof office buildings in Japan have some large springs in the foundation, and we could hear them going CLANG CLANG CLANG.
Trains and subways were stopped throughout the city, land lines and cell phones are still not functioning (land lines are spotty, but cell phones are totally dead for voice calls). I walked home and saw the streets filled with people who would normally be traveling by train or subway.
Below is an image from the Japan Meteorological Agency's website showing the current (not from 4 hours ago!) earthquake picture in Japan. I've been feeling the aftershocks all afternoon, with the most recent one just a few minutes ago.
